A Refined Southern Wedding in Historic Edenton, North Carolina | Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church & Courthouse Green Reception
A Timeless Southern Wedding Weekend in Edenton, North Carolina
There are few places in the South that embody history, hospitality, and timeless elegance quite like Edenton, North Carolina. Nestled along the shores of the Albemarle Sound, this charming waterfront town has long been known for its preserved architecture, rich history, and deep-rooted Southern traditions. For couples planning a wedding in Eastern North Carolina, Edenton offers a setting unlike any other. Centuries-old churches, waterfront views, and historic streets create the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable wedding weekend.
This particular Edenton wedding was the perfect reflection of everything that makes this town so special. Thoughtfully planned from beginning to end, the celebration welcomed 130 guests for a weekend filled with meaningful traditions, exceptional design, and genuine Southern hospitality.
A Southern Welcome Party at Hayes Farm in Edenton, North Carolina
The wedding festivities began at Hayes Farm, a stunning private estate just outside downtown Edenton. Surrounded by mature trees and sweeping grounds, the estate showcases the classic architecture that has become synonymous with the American South. Grand columns, expansive porches, symmetrical design, and timeless craftsmanship create a sense of place that immediately transports guests to another era.
As guests arrived for the welcome party, they were greeted with beautifully curated welcome bags and an atmosphere that felt both refined and inviting. Patterned linens layered throughout the event brought color and personality to the space while a live band set the tone for a weekend centered around celebration and connection.
One of the things that makes Southern weddings so memorable is the emphasis placed on gathering. Before a single guest takes their seat for the ceremony, relationships are nurtured, stories are shared, and generations come together. This welcome party embodied that spirit perfectly, serving as the ideal introduction to a wedding weekend in Edenton, North Carolina.
Getting Ready at Hayes Farm
The following morning, the bride returned to Hayes Farm to prepare for the day ahead. The estate’s classic interiors and natural light provided an elegant setting for those quiet moments before the ceremony.
One of my favorite aspects of photographing weddings in historic Southern towns is how every location contributes to the story. Rather than feeling disconnected, each venue throughout the weekend felt intentionally chosen and deeply tied to the character of Edenton itself.
As the excitement built, a trolley arrived to transport the wedding party through town toward one of Edenton’s most beloved landmarks.
A Historic Ceremony at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church
Located in the heart of downtown Edenton, Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church stands as one of North Carolina’s most significant historic churches. Dating back to the 1700s, the church has served as a cornerstone of the community for generations and remains one of the most sought-after ceremony locations for couples planning an Edenton wedding.
Stepping onto the grounds feels like stepping into history. Towering trees, historic brick pathways, and centuries of tradition create an atmosphere that simply cannot be replicated.
The ceremony itself was deeply meaningful and rooted in timeless traditions. Surrounded by family and friends, the couple exchanged vows in a setting that reflected the enduring beauty of Southern wedding culture.
Following the ceremony, we utilized the church grounds for family portraits as well as bride and groom portraits. The historic architecture and mature landscaping provided countless opportunities for timeless imagery. Every corner of Saint Paul’s offers a sense of permanence and significance, making it one of my favorite locations for wedding portraits in Eastern North Carolina.
A Sailcloth Tent Reception on Edenton’s Historic Courthouse Green
After the ceremony, guests made their way to one of the most iconic reception locations in North Carolina: the Historic Courthouse Green in downtown Edenton.
Overlooking the Albemarle Sound, the setting combines waterfront beauty with the architectural charm that has made Edenton one of the South’s most treasured towns.
Guests were welcomed to cocktail hour around the town monument, where coastal breezes drifted through the historic district as conversations unfolded beneath the late afternoon light. The layout of the space created a natural flow, with guests gathering around the monument before ascending the brick terrace and steps that led directly into the reception tent.
Waiting beyond was an extraordinary sailcloth tent that transformed the Courthouse Green into a celebration space unlike any other. Every detail felt so personal and intentional.
A striking 360-degree bar served as the focal point of the reception design, surrounded by statement floral installations bursting with color, movement, and whimsy. Sashes tied around each exterior tent pole added a layer of softness and refinement while strands of market lights illuminated the interior overhead.
The design embraced pattern play in the most sophisticated way. A collection of carefully selected linens mixed and matched throughout the tent, each complementing the next while adding visual interest and depth. Citrine embroidered napkins introduced another layer of texture and color, while alternating chair styles created a collected, curated aesthetic that felt both elevated and welcoming.
The floral design was abundant and expressive, overflowing with seasonal blooms in vibrant hues that perfectly reflected the joyful atmosphere of the evening.
The guest attire only enhanced the visual experience. Friends and family arrived dressed in colorful florals, elegant patterns, and formal attire that felt perfectly suited for an evening in historic Edenton. Every detail—from the wardrobe to the tablescapes—worked together to create a celebration that felt distinctly Southern while remaining fresh and personal.
A Celebration Rooted in Southern Hospitality
What made this wedding particularly memorable wasn't simply the beautiful design or breathtaking location—it was the experience created for every guest in attendance.
Southern hospitality was woven into every aspect of the weekend.
From the thoughtfully curated welcome gifts to the seamless flow of events, every decision reflected a desire to make guests feel welcomed, celebrated, and cared for.
The reception menu was equally unforgettable, serving as a beautiful reflection of Eastern North Carolina's rich culinary traditions. Guests enjoyed a thoughtfully curated dining experience that balanced regional flavors with refined presentation. Combined with the impeccable design, vibrant florals, and exceptional atmosphere, the evening became far more than a reception—it became an experience guests will remember for years to come.
As the band filled the sailcloth tent with music and guests gathered on the dance floor overlooking the Albemarle Sound, it became clear that this wedding represented everything that makes Edenton such a remarkable destination for a Southern wedding.
Why Edenton, North Carolina Is One of the South's Best Wedding Destinations
For couples dreaming of a wedding that feels timeless, meaningful, and deeply connected to place, Edenton offers something truly special.
Historic churches. Waterfront views. Preserved architecture. Generations of Southern tradition. A walkable downtown filled with character. And an atmosphere that prioritizes hospitality above all else.
Whether exchanging vows inside a centuries-old church, hosting a waterfront reception beneath a sailcloth tent, or gathering loved ones for a weekend of celebration, Edenton provides the perfect setting for couples who value history, family, tradition, and thoughtful details.
This wedding was a beautiful reminder that the most memorable celebrations are not simply beautiful—they are deeply rooted in who a couple is and where their story unfolds.
And there may be no better place to tell that story than Edenton, North Carolina.

an elevated black tie dinner party on the outer banks
A Surprise 60th Birthday celebration filled with dramatic color, SHOW STOPPING details and BEAUTIFUL design.
When a former wedding client’s parent reached out about photographing a milestone birthday celebration for her husband, I was especially excited to be invited back into their family’s story. I had photographed their son’s wedding several years earlier, so this wasn’t my first time photographing this family. What I didn’t know yet was just how far she was going to take the design for her husband’s surprise birthday dinner.
This wasn’t a wedding, and it didn’t need to follow any of the traditional rules of wedding design.
Instead, she created an intimate, black-tie dinner party that felt completely immersive. Every element of the evening, from the draped tent and custom lighting to the floral design, candlelit tablescape, and custom menu presentation, was designed to make an impression.
As an Outer Banks event photographer, this was my DREAM.
A Black-Tie Dinner Party Designed From the Ground Up
The celebration took place beneath a small, intimate dinner tent that had been completely transformed with a plum eggplant-colored drapery from floor to ceiling.
The color immediately established the mood.
Rather than the lighter, coastal palette that often comes to mind when you think about an Outer Banks event, this dinner party leaned into something much richer: deep eggplant, burgundy, wine, red, magenta, and warm rich tones.
Above the dinner table, custom starburst mid-century modern-inspired chandeliers radiated across the ceiling like bursts of light. Th one of a kind lighting was one of the most striking architectural elements of the evening.
And then there were the flowers.
An Abundant Tablescape in Shades of Red, Burgundy, and Magenta
The tablescape was intentionally maximalist. Flowers spilled down the length of the dinner table in shades of crimson red, deep burgundy, magenta, wine, and soft pink, creating an almost continuous floral installation through the center of the table. Rather than relying on one large centerpiece, the design incorporated arrangements at varying heights and scales, interspersed with an incredible number of candles.
Tall glass candleholders, smaller votives, reflective glassware, and the floral arrangements created layers of light across the table. That layering was particularly beautiful once guests arrived. The candlelight reflected off the glassware and metallic flatware while the flowers seemed to become even richer against the dark eggplant linens. The entire table glowed.
There was a sense of abundance everywhere, but it never felt random. Every piece seemed to have been selected with the larger design in mind.
Eggplant Velvet, Gold Details, and a Tablescape Meant for Dinner
The linens were another major part of the design. Deep eggplant-colored velvet gave the table an almost tactile quality, adding softness and dimension beneath the candles and flowers. Gold flatware introduced warmth, while jewel-toned glassware added another layer of color.
This is one of the things I find so interesting about photographing an elevated dinner party: the experience is created through dozens of small decisions.
The linens matter.
The glassware matters.
The candle height matters.
The way a napkin is folded matters.
The amount of negative space between floral arrangements matters.
The lighting matters.
And once all of those elements come together, they create something that photographs very differently than any one individual detail would on its own. For an event like this, I’m always looking beyond the obvious centerpiece. I want to photograph the relationships between all of those details and the way they make the entire room feel.
The Custom Menu That Became a Design Element
But perhaps my favorite detail of the entire evening was the custom menu presentation. This was not a traditional folded menu sitting at each place setting. Instead, each guest received what appeared to be a small, transparent acrylic box. Inside was a sheer burgundy printed material emerging from the top. The material could be slowly pulled from the box, revealing the menu as it extended.
It was almost like opening a tiny piece of packaging designed specifically for the occasion, except the reveal itself became part of the experience.
And that distinction is important. A menu can simply tell your guests what they’re eating. This one gave them something to discover.
The clear acrylic box, sheer burgundy material, floral artwork, and printed details felt completely connected to the rest of the dinner party design. It wasn't an afterthought placed on the table. It was another layer of the visual story.
When Dinner Party Design Feels More Like Fashion Editorial Than Traditional Event Design
There was something distinctly editorial about this celebration. The combination of the dark color palette, sculptural lighting, velvet linens, saturated florals, abundant candlelight, and black-tie dress code created an atmosphere that felt closer to a fashion editorial than a conventional birthday party.
The Outer Banks is often associated with bright beach weddings, airy coastal palettes, and outdoor celebrations. Those events can be beautiful, but this dinner was a reminder of how much creative range there is when you're willing to move beyond the expected.
An intimate dinner tent can become an entirely different world. Deep color can completely change the feeling of an outdoor event. A small guest list can actually allow for more attention to detail.
And a milestone birthday can be designed with the same level of intention as a wedding.
A Surprise Birthday Celebration With the Thoughtfulness of a Luxury Wedding
What I loved most about this event was that the care behind it was so evident. The host had taken the time to create an experience specifically for her husband. The celebration wasn't designed around what was expected for a 60th birthday party. It was designed around the kind of evening she wanted to create for the people she loved.
That level of intention is something I recognize immediately.
It is also one of the reasons I love photographing celebrations for former wedding clients. A wedding may be the first time I meet a family, but sometimes it isn't the last time our paths cross. Years later, I can find myself photographing another chapter: an anniversary, a birthday, a family portrait, or a dinner party that brings everyone back together.
I already know how much thought this family puts into celebrating the people they love, and they already know how I approach photographing those details.
Photography for Elevated Dinner Parties and Private Events
Although weddings remain a significant part of my work as an Outer Banks photographer, celebrations like this are a natural extension of the way I approach wedding photography. I photograph events with an editorial eye, paying attention to the architecture of the space, the design, the tablescape, the flowers, the lighting, the fashion, and the smaller details that might otherwise be overlooked.
For a dinner party, that might mean photographing the entire room before guests arrive.
It might mean getting close to the floral arrangements and candlelight.
It might mean documenting a custom menu or an unexpected piece of stationery.
It might mean photographing the way a guest reaches across the table for a drink, the reaction when the birthday guest realizes the party is actually for him, or the way everyone looks dressed up around a candlelit dinner.
The goal isn't simply to document that the party happened.
It's to create photographs that allow you to remember what the evening felt like.
An Outer Banks Celebration Worth Designing Around
This surprise 60th birthday dinner was a beautiful example of what can happen when an intimate celebration is given the same creative attention as a major wedding.
A small tent became an immersive dining room. Velvet transformed the table. Lighting became part of the atmosphere. Red, burgundy, magenta, and pink flowers created an abundant floral landscape. And a custom menu presentation turned something functional into one of the evening's most memorable details.
Most importantly, the entire experience felt personal. It didn't look like a template for a birthday party. It looked like her celebration for her husband.
And after photographing their family several years ago for their son's wedding, being invited back to document this milestone was an especially meaningful full-circle moment for me. These are the events that remind me why I love photographing celebrations in the first place.

a timeless ocracoke island wedding at berkley manor
Refined Southern Elegance Meets Costal North Carolina Charm
Ocracoke Island weddings are rare, unforgettable, and deeply rooted in the kind of Southern charm that feels untouched by time. Nestled off the coast of North Carolina, Ocracoke is a place where history, heritage, and the serene beauty of the Outer Banks meet in perfect harmony. For couples who dream of a coastal destination that feels both exclusive and meaningful, there’s nothing quite like saying “I do” on this remote barrier island.
For this particular Ocracoke Island wedding, the day carried an extra layer of significance. The bride’s family traced their roots on the island back more than ten generations — a lineage that infused every detail with sentiment and tradition. This wasn’t simply a wedding on Ocracoke Island; it was a homecoming, a celebration of family legacy, and a continuation of the island’s story through a new generation of love.
a ceremony steeped in traditioin
The ceremony took place at Ocracoke United Methodist Church, a charming and historic chapel in the heart of the island. With its white clapboard exterior, weathered shutters, and timeless Southern architecture, the church stands as one of Ocracoke’s most iconic landmarks. Inside, soft natural light streamed through the windows as vows were exchanged — a moment that felt as if it belonged to both the present and the past.
The service was heartfelt and traditional, honoring the couple’s deep family connections to the island while welcoming guests from Washington, D.C. and across the East Coast. It was a quintessential Ocracoke moment: a blending of community, history, and understated elegance that only this island can offer.
a black tie celebration at berkley manor
Following the ceremony, guests made their way to Berkley Manor, one of Ocracoke Island’s most historic and refined wedding venues. The manor’s stately architecture and waterfront views provided a perfect backdrop for a black tie reception that felt both sophisticated and authentically coastal.
Cocktail hour unfolded on the lawn as the sun dipped low over Silver Lake Harbor — the kind of soft, golden light that defines the best of coastal North Carolina evenings. Signature drinks and Southern-inspired hors d’oeuvres set the tone for an elegant yet inviting celebration.
Inside the reception venue, every element of the design reflected a thoughtful balance of timeless tradition and modern editorial style. Details were softened by layers of candlelight, floral arrangements in soft coastal hues, and polished place settings that spoke to the couple’s elevated taste. The design perfectly mirrored Ocracoke’s essence: refined, grounded in history, and effortlessly beautiful.
Coastal sophistication, rooted in heritage
What makes Ocracoke Island weddings so distinct is their ability to combine luxury and intimacy in equal measure. The island’s seclusion means every celebration feels personal — a private destination that still carries the soul of the South. Here, coastal elegance isn’t just an aesthetic; it’s a feeling. It’s the sound of the harbor at sunset, the charm of historic homes, and the warmth of a community that has cherished its traditions for generations.
This wedding exemplified everything that makes Berkley Manor such an extraordinary venue choice for discerning couples. From its historic architecture to its proximity to Ocracoke’s harbor, it offers a quintessentially Southern experience with all the refined touches that define a luxury destination wedding.
a destination like no other
For couples seeking a wedding experience that feels truly one-of-a-kind, Ocracoke Island offers something that can’t be replicated anywhere else on the Outer Banks. Accessible only by ferry or private boat, it feels secluded yet welcoming — an island where time slows down, and every detail has space to breathe.
It’s this blend of Southern hospitality, coastal sophistication, and timeless heritage that continues to draw couples to Ocracoke. Whether exchanging vows in one of the island’s historic churches or celebrating beneath the stars at Berkley Manor, an Ocracoke Island wedding promises an experience that’s both deeply personal and endlessly elegant.
the essence of an elevated coastal CELEBRATION
This wedding was more than a beautiful event — it was a reflection of everything that defines luxury weddings on the Outer Banks. Thoughtful design, editorial styling, and intentional storytelling came together to create a day that honored the past while embracing modern refinement.
For couples envisioning a wedding that feels steeped in history yet styled for the present, Ocracoke Island and Berkley Manor are the perfect pairing. Together, they embody the spirit of coastal North Carolina: elegant, timeless, and beautifully unrepeatable.
Why We Loved This Wedding
From the very beginning, this celebration felt deeply personal — a love story interwoven with the legacy of Ocracoke itself. We loved the sense of place that carried through every detail: the walk from the historic church to the Berkley Manor lawn, the sound of gulls in the harbor during cocktail hour, and the way guests mingled during cocktail hour around Berkley Manor’s propterty.
What stood out most to us, though, was how effortlessly this couple balanced heritage and sophistication. Their day honored the generations that came before them while embracing modern, fashion-forward details that elevated the entire experience. It was a perfect reflection of what we love most about photographing weddings on Ocracoke Island — the ability to tell stories that are as editorial as they are emotional.
Ocracoke weddings invite us to slow down, to create art from the quiet in-between moments, and to capture the kind of refined Southern celebration that will never go out of style. This day, in every way, was the heart of what we love about photographing the Outer Banks.
